Meet Our Therapists: Ellen Wetherill

We are so excited to be bringing on another wonderful therapist to our team, Ellen Wetherill! Ellen recently completed her Clinical Fellowship at a private practice in North Carolina and is excited to bring her clinical skills to her hometown of Birmingham. Read below to learn more about her experience and passions. Welcome, Ellen!

1. Tell us about your family.

I grew up in Birmingham so I am very excited to be reunited with my family! I grew up with my wonderful parents, older sister that currently lives in Birmingham, and older brother that lives in Michigan!  I got married this past April to my husband, Richard, who just graduated from UNC Adams School of Dentistry.  We met at Furman in 2018 :)

2. Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I love all things coffee, cooking, playing pickleball, reading, and traveling with friends!

3. Favorite Birmingham restaurant?

Oh, that is a tough choice because I love so many!  If I had to choose, I'd say my current favorite is The Essential.

4.  Where did you go to school?

I went to Furman University in Greenville, SC for my undergraduate career, and I went to the University of Alabama for my master's degree in speech-language pathology!

5.  What made you want to be an SLP?

I have always loved working with people, especially kids, and I have also always loved psychology.  After researching and talking with people, I realized that speech pathology is the perfect merging of those interests and have loved it ever since the first day that I shadowed!

6. What's your favorite aspect of being an SLP?

I absolutely love the relationships that I get to develop with clients and their families.  There is nothing better than being able to help support children in finding their voice and growing in their confidence!

7. What are your favorite resources for learning more about speech and language?

I love following educational instagram accounts like learn with chatterboxes and graham speech therapy to name just a couple, listening to podcasts, navigating ASHA, and asking advice from friends from graduate school as well as mentors in the field!  I am always looking to learn more!

8. What's the one thing you wish parents knew about speech and language?

I wish parents realized that they are the best facilitators of their child's language learning and development just by incorporating simple routines and strategies, playing with their children, and reading to them!  I wish parents knew that supporting their child's language growth can often seamlessly fit into their daily lives!
