Meet Our Therapists: Sara Enger

We’re thrilled to have Sara Enger joining the therapy team at Steel City Speech! Sara has served in both public school and private practice settings, and as you’ll see below, she loves engaging her clients though play and creativity. Welcome, Sara!

Tell us about your family.

I am originally from Dacula, GA, where I grew up with my parents and three younger sisters. I got married in October of 2021 to my husband, Michael. We met at Samford in 2014, and we just bought our first house! We have two giant, fluffy, Maine Coon cats named Cannoli and Waffles.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

My current hobbies are reading and group fitness classes. My favorite books are twisty mysteries and nonfiction books about wellness, psychology, or anatomy. I love doing barre and spin classes. Growing up, I was never very athletic, but I have recently found out that I enjoy exercise more with a group of people to hold me accountable.

Favorite Birmingham restaurant?

El Barrio and Cookie Fix

Where did you go to school?

I went to Samford University for my undergraduate degree and Georgia State University for graduate school.

What made you want to be an SLP?

I knew I wanted to be an SLP in high school. I was fortunate enough to participate in a high school class where we had the opportunity to intern at a different job each semester. My first semester, I tried teaching, and I quickly found out that while I love working with kids, I did not love being that outnumbered! Teachers are amazing, but I found out that it was not for me. My mom had a friend from Sunday school that owned her own speech therapy clinic in Atlanta, and she agreed to host me as an intern for the second semester. I loved it and I have wanted to be an SLP ever since.

What's your favorite aspect of being an SLP?

The best part of being an SLP is working, laughing, and having fun with clients! I also enjoy the creativity involved in planning fun and educational sessions.

What are your favorite resources for learning more about speech and language?

For my own professional continued learning, I like to use the website speechpathology.com. I am an auditory learner, and I love how I can listen to videos and listen to research articles in a podcast type format. My favorite resource for more creative inspiration is actually Instagram! There are several incredible SLP creators!

What's the one thing you wish parents knew about speech and language?

I once had a mentor tell me that speech therapy is like piano lessons. You wouldn't expect to be playing in an orchestra if you practice for 30 minutes a week during a lesson. Home practice is so critical for progress and carryover!
